Motorcycle rental in India: licence, insurance, deposit, handover

Renting a motorcycle in India is either completely straightforward or ends in an argument about a deposit. The difference is almost always three things: the documents you brought, the insurance written into the contract, and how the bike's condition was recorded at handover.

Documents you must have

A foreign licence alone is not enough for a motorcycle in India. You need an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle category matching the engine size.

  • Valid passport and visa.
  • Original home-country driving licence.
  • International Driving Permit, category A.
  • An address in India for the rental contract.

What insurance covers — and what it doesn't

Compulsory Indian insurance covers third parties only. Damage to the bike itself is covered only with an add-on, and riding without the right licence or under alcohol voids everything.

Separately, your personal travel policy must explicitly name motorcycle riding at the engine size you ride, or a medical claim gets rejected.

Deposits and payment

With us the deposit is recorded in the system, shown on your booking page and released automatically at check-out when there is no damage or fine. Wherever you rent, insist on written confirmation of the deposit amount and refund terms — never cash without a receipt.

The ten-minute handover check

Before you leave, walk the bike with the staff member and photograph everything.

  • Brakes, tyre pressure and tread depth.
  • Lights, horn and fuel gauge.
  • Existing scratches and dents — photos from every side.
  • Breakdown phone number and recovery cover.

Frequently asked

Can I rent without an International Driving Permit?
Don't. Even if someone rents to you, you ride uninsured, and any accident or police check becomes an expensive problem.
What engine size suits a first-timer?
350cc is the comfortable Indian standard. 500cc and above suit experienced riders, especially in the mountains.
Can I return the bike at a different branch?
Yes. We support pick-up at one branch and return at another, with a transfer fee shown up front in the booking.
What if the bike breaks down?
Call the support number you were given. We arrange a local repair or a replacement, and a mechanical fault that isn't rider-caused never comes out of your deposit.
