When to ride in Ladakh: season, passes and altitude

Ladakh is not a year-round destination, and that is exactly what makes it special. The riding window opens when the snow leaves the passes and closes when it returns. Get the dates right and you get empty roads and clean skies; miss by two weeks and you meet a closed pass.
The months worth aiming for
The season runs roughly from late May to late September. June to mid-September is the safe core, and even then mountain weather turns within hours.
- Late May–June: passes open, light traffic, very cold nights.
- July–August: peak season. Warmest, busiest, and monsoon rain on the Manali approach.
- September: the best light of the year, fewer people, small risk of an early pass closure.
Acclimatisation — the two days you never skip
Leh sits at about 3,500 m and the routes cross far higher passes. The only thing that reliably works is time: two full nights in Leh before your first riding day.
Drink constantly, skip alcohol, keep to short walks. A mild headache is normal; breathlessness at rest, confusion or vomiting means descend, not push on.
First routes out of Leh
Start short: Nubra valley over Khardung La, Pangong lake across two days, and the Lamayuru loop for monastery scenery without an extreme pass.
- Nubra — 2 days, high pass, overnight in Diskit or Hunder.
- Pangong — 2 days, mostly good tarmac, bitter nights.
- Lamayuru — one day, ideal as a first day on the bike.
Permits, fuel and connectivity
Protected areas need an Inner Line Permit, arranged in Leh within a day. Fuel stops are rare on the long routes — leave full and carry a jerrycan for big days. Mobile coverage mostly works on Indian postpaid SIMs, so agree meeting points in advance.
Frequently asked
- Do I need previous riding experience for Ladakh?
- Yes. Expect gravel, water crossings and long descents. At least one season of riding is recommended; newer riders should take a training day or ride with a guide.
- Can I ride Ladakh in October?
- Sometimes, but it is a gamble. Passes can close at short notice and nights drop below freezing. With fixed October dates, plan short loops around Leh.
- How many days should I allow?
- Seven at minimum: two to acclimatise and five to ride. Ten days let you do both Nubra and Pangong without rushing.
